First date safety checklist
Most first dates from an app are uneventful. These are the habits that keep it that way, taken from the safety advice dating apps publish themselves.
Before you meet
- Take your time getting to know the person in the app first.
- Have a phone or video call before meeting; it is a quick way to spot red flags.
- Keep personal details private: home or work address, daily routine, financial details.
- Tell a friend or family member who you are meeting, where and when.
- Plan your own way there and back, plus a backup (a ride-share app or a friend).
During the date
- Meet in a busy public place and stay there. Do not go to either person’s home or another private place.
- Keep your phone charged and with you; consider sharing your location with a friend.
- Only accept drinks served directly by the bartender or server, and keep your drink with you.
- Know how alcohol affects you, and leave if you are pressured to drink more than you want.
- If you feel uncomfortable, it is fine to leave early. If you feel unsafe, ask staff for help.
After the date
- Let your friend know you are home.
- If someone was abusive or broke the app’s rules, block and report them in the app.
- If anyone asks you for money after a date, treat it as a warning sign (see romance scam warning signs).
